Is Your Workshop Shed Cedar?
Purchasing Plywood, Veneer Cedar and Other Sheet Goods
There are many types of sheet goods but plywood is the most common and widely used. Plywood will be used in any number of our workshop shed projects and other sheet goods will be used occasionally. In this short article let’s have a look at the types of plywood available and some of the other sheet goods that are available as well. If you have decided to build your shed cedar then you can purchase cedar veneer plywood. Plywood is an extremely versatile sheet material that is manufactured from thinly slice sheets or plies of wood. It is available in thicknesses from 3/16 inch to ¾ inch and graded from A to D depending on the quality of the wood on its outer layers. It is also graded for either interior or exterior use.
Finish plywood can be graded one of two ways. If it is graded A-A it has a finish veneer on both sides. This is a good thing. If it is graded A-C it has a finish quality wood veneer on one side and a utility grade on the other side. This is not bad but it is not as good as the A-A. The price point will be different depending on the grade.
Sheathing plywood is waterproof and graded C-D meaning it has two rough sides. The “Exposure 1″ rated sheathing plywood indicates it can be used where there is some moisture present. If it is rated “Exterior” it can be used where it will be permanently exposed to weather.
Plastic laminates are what the surfaces of kitchen counters are made of. Plastic laminate might also be used for shelving, cabinets and furniture. Strand-, particle-, and waferboard are used for shelving and floor underlayment and are commonly made of wood chips or inexpensive wood species.
Foam insulating board is used as insulation in basement walls. It is very lightweight.
Cementboard is use in high moisture areas and behind ceramic wall tiles.
Wallboard is also known as sheetrock, drywall and plasterboard. It come in various lengths and thicknesses but is always 4 feet wide.
Pegboard and Hardboard are used for shelf backing and workbench tool organization. It is made from wood fibres and resins bonded together.
All of these different board types can be purchased from the local lumber yard or big box hardware stores such as Home Depot or Lowe’s.
