Fencing ? Pine verses hard wood?

We are building a fence that has panels of wood between brick render piers and are pricing hardwood decking to put between the piers. If we use a top quality timber stain/protector will pine stand up to the same wear and tear as hardwood. And does anyone know if it is possible to use Exterior Ply as fencing panels – does it wear well?

I’m not sure I understand what you are doing exactly. Strictly speaking, whether you use a hardwood or pine (a softwood) does not matter as much as whether it is treated with a user-applied finish or whether it was pressure treated, as pine frequently is. I’m not familiar with “hardwood decking”. Which wood are you referring to exactly? If hardwoods are used that have a lot of natural oils, such as teak, it will last a relatively long time. And NO, I would not use exterior plywood for a project that will be exposed to wet weather for long periods of time. Even though it is labeled as exterior, it will not last nearly as long as a solid wood variety meant for exterior use, such as treated pine or cedar.
