Hardwood Floors from lumber?

Is it possible, and more cost effective, to pick out lumber, get it cut into planks, then prep and lay it as hardwood flooring? There is not much info out about the how-tos…would it be simple or difficult? Also, would you HAVE to cut tongue in groove, or is it unnecessary?
Do you have any suggestions on where to go to find out how? We want real hardwood-but what we want is $1300 for a 180 sq ft room.

T n G would be best on a floor – (the edges need to stay even) you could do it yourself but it aint all that cheap – you can buy prefab flooring boards two or three times for what real wood cost – but if its for you – always go w/ the best n you’ll always be happy
