plywood substrate for granite tile countertop ?

Ok, hope nobody gets tired of my endless questions. Ok, can this setup work? 3/4″ plywood substrate and then a smaller layer of plywood on that such as 1/2″. The Benissimo product suppliers call for only a 3/4″ piece but that barely allows the bullnose to clear my top drawers. Can I save some money and not get ac plywood for the bottom layer and get it for the top layer of plywood? I am also trying to get away with not having to do a cement backerboard. Also, should I drive the screws through both pieces and into the cabinets or install the bottom layer first and then glue, screw or nail the next layer to that?
thx
I will be sealing the plywood with a product called redguard

If you are tiling your counter top you really cannot get away from using backboard for many reasons. Chances are that eliminating the backboard is one of the reasons you are having a height issue! There are plenty effective ways to add additional height, but leaving out the backboard simply should not be an option!! You can use the 1/4″ backboard if you are careful and make up the remaining difference with plywood or even cork.

Hope this helps!
