Plywood

Using Plywood Successfully for Boat Building
Plywood is an excellent material from which to build a wooden boat. This is because it is a very easily modified wood with excellent flotation capabilities. Plywood has transformed the boat building industry in recent decades, with many boat building schools now preferring to teach plywood boat building methods at least initially to beginning boat builders.
However, despite its ease of use, there are some steps you can take to make your plywood boat building projects as successful as possible. To start, you need to make sure you are using the right quality of plywood. For many projects, marine plywood is preferred. Particularly for areas where the plywood will be bent, marine plywood is the best choice. However, regular plywood can be used for many plywood boat projects. You should go with a good grade plywood (at least AB grade) however, since wood knots and other blemishes can leak and the time, money and effort spent sealing these blemishes is often far greater than investing in a better grade of plywood.
For larger boat projects, you do not need to find huge sheets of plywood. In fact, standard 4 by 8 foot sheets of plywood joined using methods such as butt blocks tends to be stronger than stand alone plywood sheets.
Although plywood is an excellent boat building materials, there are places where it should not be used. In particular, plywood is not ideal for the frame construction where you should rely on regular lumber instead. For areas where there is a lot of bending required, plywood also often needs special water treatments to allow it to bend easily and not crack.
