Rough Cut Lumber

How would I protect a new house from termintes?

Hi, I’m in the process of building a new home from rough cut lumber and was wondering if i could buy a chemical to spray on the base to protect from termite and/or water damage. Is cresote a good product?

Creosote is recognised as being excessively toxic. In the long run it is a bad choice. For protected timbers (above the soil and out of the rain), boron-based preservatives are an easy application. If you want extra zip, apply a bifenthrin as well.

Keeping you timbers out of ground contact and as dry as possible is the main aim. Where the timbers sit on foundations, use a heavy moisture proof strip like bitumen or thick HDPE to prevent moisture entry and deter stray termites. Ideally, a full metal strip shielding system.
